Former Anambra State governor Peter Obi completed his membership registration with the African Democratic Congress on Saturday in Agulu, located in Aniocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The development marks a major political shift as Peter Obi joins ADC, positioning himself ahead of the 2027 presidential race.

Obi stated that the decision was part of broader efforts to strengthen the opposition and mobilise support across Nigeria.

During the event, Obi announced that he would challenge aspects of the Electoral Act 2026 in court.

He argued that certain provisions of the law could undermine credible elections and allow political manipulation in future polls.
Obi also accused the Independent National Electoral Commission of overstepping its constitutional role.

“INEC has no reason to assume processes in how political parties elect their candidates. Its responsibility is to conduct elections,” Obi said.

Using a football analogy, he added that the electoral commission should function like a referee rather than dictate how political parties choose candidates.

As Peter Obi joins ADC, he also alleged that some of the new electoral provisions were designed to benefit the ruling party ahead of the next presidential election.

According to him, the law could be used to influence the outcome of the 2027 polls.
“All the laws being hurriedly created are simply aimed at enabling the ruling party to snatch the 2027 presidential election and run away with it,” he said.

Obi urged supporters and party members to intensify mobilisation efforts across communities.

He noted that Anambra State alone has about 2.8 million registered voters, stressing the importance of encouraging citizens to participate in the electoral process.

The former presidential candidate also called for unity among opposition groups nationwide.

“In this journey of 2027, we in the South-East are working as a family and discussing with other regions,” he said.

The National Organising Secretary of the party, Chinedu Idigo, explained that the party’s membership registration exercise would take place both online and physically.

He said prospective members must complete their online registration before collecting membership cards from designated centres.
Idigo also announced that 50,000 membership cards had already been distributed in the state, with more expected soon.

Meanwhile, the ADC candidate in the 2025 Anambra governorship election, John Nwosu, described Obi’s registration as a major boost for the party.

“This is a day of joy. The journey of Obi to the presidency begins today,” Nwosu said.
