A New York judge has handed down a scathing decision against Donald Trump and his family business, alleging that they fraudulently inflated the value of their properties and other assets. This ruling represents a significant setback for the former U.S. president and could have far-reaching consequences for his ability to conduct business in the state of New York.
Justice Arthur Engoron of the New York state court in Manhattan issued this decision, which is expected to make it easier for the state Attorney General, Letitia James, to demonstrate damages during the scheduled trial on October 2.
In his ruling, Justice Engoron not only criticized the alleged actions of Trump and his associates but also ordered the cancellation of certificates that permitted several Trump-owned businesses, including the Trump Organization, to operate within the state of New York. Furthermore, the judge appointed a receiver to oversee the dissolution of these businesses.
The core of the case revolves around accusations that Trump, along with his adult sons Donald Jr. and Eric and the Trump Organization, artificially inflated the valuations of their assets and Trump's net worth. This alleged manipulation was purportedly done to serve their business interests.
Justice Engoron did not mince words in his ruling, describing the actions of Trump and his associates as creating a "fantasy world" that did not align with reality. The judge also admonished the defendants' legal team for making "preposterous" legal arguments and supporting their clients' "obstreperous" behavior.
Trump and the other defendants have consistently denied any wrongdoing, asserting that they never engaged in fraud and that the challenged transactions were profitable. They have indicated their intention to appeal Justice Engoron's decision.
While the legal battle unfolds, this ruling is expected to have significant implications for Trump's business operations, particularly in New York. It remains to be seen how this development will affect Trump's political ambitions, as he currently holds a commanding lead in the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.
