Foreign workers trained in these professions can now apply for work visas and pay a reduced application fee, helping to address UK job shortages and boost the economy.
The move has been defended by Downing Street, which argues that it does not contradict the Home Secretary's ambition to reduce overall immigration figures and end reliance on overseas workers.
However, applicants still need a sponsored job offer and must meet English-language requirements under the government's points-based immigration system.
