Former US President Donald Trump praised Russian President Vladimir Putin's aggression against Ukraine as "genius" on Tuesday, but claimed that the issue would not have occurred during his administration.
Trump described Putin's tactics as "clever," claiming that the US could imitate them on its border with Mexico without explaining.
He followed up with a further statement claiming that the Ukraine situation could have been avoided entirely if President Joe Biden, who defeated him in the 2020 election, had managed it "correctly."
"I know Vladimir Putin well, and he would never have done what he is doing now under the Trump administration, no way!"
Trump's foreign policy has empowered Putin, according to Fiona Hill, a former White House Russia advisor.
