Onitsha, Anambra State, was shocked by a fire explosion on Friday after a petrol tanker carrying premium motor spirit caught fire near the city's famed Upper Iweka crossroads.
Many shops and buildings in the area were burned in the incident, which occurred around 8:30 a.m. in front of the Relief market.
According to an eyewitness, the tragedy was caused by a broken down articulated vehicle on the busy Onitsha-Owerri motorway. Firefighters from both Anambra and Delta states battled the roaring fire, causing significant traffic congestion along the route.
Tochukwu Ikenga, a police spokesperson, verified the incident. "Information suggests that the fire was caused by a tanker carrying fuel by Obodoukwu junction along the Onitsha River Owerri route falling," he stated.
"The situation is under control, and we're keeping a careful eye on it." Currently, the police and fire departments are on the scene."
