More than 70 people have been kidnapped along the Kaduna-Birnin Gwari road in Kaduna State.
On Wednesday, the tragedy occurred in Udawa village after Buruku in the state's Chikun Local Government Area.
According to eyewitness accounts, the travellers, mostly traders, were ambushed by a large group of gunmen thought to be robbers.
According to Mohammed Jalige, the command's spokesperson, operatives from the Buruku Divisional Police station were escorting passengers along the road when they were attacked by an unknown number of gunmen who started fire on the moving vehicles.
