The minority caucus in the House of Representatives believes President Muhammadu Buhari's dismissal of two ministers is a "strategy" to divert attention away from his administration's shortcomings.

Buhari fired Saleh Mamman, the minister of power, and Sabo Nanono, the minister of agriculture and rural development, on Wednesday.

Ndudi Elumelu, the minority leader of the lower chamber, said in a statement on Thursday that the president should “stop diversionary stunts” and focus on addressing the country's “worsening insecurity and excruciating economic hardship.”

"The minority caucus in the House of Representatives has dismissed President Muhammadu Buhari's dismissal of two ministers as a diversionary strategy to divert public attention from the myriads of failures of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration over the last six years," the statement reads.

"The minority caucus, and indeed the majority of Nigerians, are unconvinced by the dismissal of the minister of agriculture and rural development, Mohammed Nanono, and his power counterpart, Saleh Mamman, as long as the administration's inept and anti-people policies, as well as its corruption and sluggish approach to governance, remain.

"Rather than resorting to unprofitable diversionary stunts, the Minority caucus urges President Buhari to take decisive action to address worsening insecurity and excruciating economic hardship by putting an end to incompetence, compromises, corruption, exclusionism, and impunity in the system under his watch.

"The Minority Caucus believes that at the highest levels of government, commitment, demonstration of capacity, political willpower, transparency, and broadmindedness are required."

The minority caucus urged the president to “get into the arena by taking urgent steps to address security issues as well as revitalize our nation's economy and cohesiveness, which are collapsing under his administration."
