Manchester United vs Manchester City produced a dramatic Manchester derby on Sunday as City secured a 1-0 victory at Old Trafford despite playing with 10 men for more than an hour.

Manchester City’s task became difficult in the first half when Phil Foden was shown a straight red card for kicking out at Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes. The decision sparked controversy, with the dismissal later upheld following a VAR review.

United took advantage of the numerical advantage and enjoyed periods of pressure, with the hosts hitting the post during the match. However, Manchester City remained organised and eventually found the breakthrough.

Haaland scored the only goal of the game in the 60th minute after Josko Gvardiol’s low cross took a deflection before reaching the Norwegian striker at the back post.

The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but a lengthy VAR review overturned the decision. VAR determined that Haaland was not offside and that Enzo Fernández’s position did not constitute an interference with play.

The decision added to an already controversial derby, particularly after Foden’s earlier dismissal. Pundits and former players subsequently debated whether the red card was justified and whether Fernandes should also have faced punishment.

Despite having an extra player for most of the match, Manchester United were unable to find an equaliser as City’s defence held firm to secure all three points.

The victory maintained Manchester City’s perfect start to the Premier League campaign under manager Enzo Maresca and kept the club level on points with Arsenal at the top of the table.

For Manchester United, the defeat continued a difficult start to the league campaign. The result left them 13th in the table after dropping points in three of their first four league matches.
