The Donald Trump issued a direct warning to Claudia Sheinbaum, saying the United States expects Mexico to eliminate powerful drug cartels operating within its borders.
In a video statement, Trump praised Sheinbaum personally but made clear that the situation with organized crime in Mexico must change.
“She’s a good woman, very smart, very tough. I like her. But the cartels run your country. That ends now. Either Mexico eradicates them or we will,” Trump said.
The statement follows Mexico’s decision earlier this year to extradite 37 high-ranking cartel members to the United States.
Despite this cooperation, the Mexican government has continued to reject any American military presence on its territory.
A recent joint security operation targeting the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, supported by U.S. intelligence, produced some results but reportedly fell short of the decisive crackdown the White House is demanding.
The issue has gained urgency as the United States continues to face a deadly fentanyl epidemic.
U.S. officials estimate that more than 107,000 Americans die annually from drug overdoses, many linked to fentanyl trafficked by Mexican cartels.
The White House believes the current level of cooperation between both countries is not enough to stop the flow of drugs across the border.
Trump emphasized that diplomatic compliments would not replace concrete action against criminal groups.
According to him, the United States expects Mexico to dismantle cartel networks responsible for drug trafficking, violence, and cross-border crime.
The message from Washington, he suggested, is straightforward: Mexico must eliminate cartel power or risk stronger intervention from the United States.
