Iranian state media has confirmed that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been killed during a wave of joint U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on Tehran, marking one of the most dramatic escalations in the Middle East crisis in decades. The reported killing follows coordinated attacks on high-security targets in the Iranian capital.
Iranian state TV confirms death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei after U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Tehran.

A visibly emotional presenter on Iranian state television announced Khamenei’s death, confirming that the 85-year-old cleric was killed during the overnight bombardment of Tehran. The broadcaster stated that 40 days of national mourning would be observed across Iran following the loss of the country’s highest political and religious authority.

Khamenei, who had ruled the Islamic Republic since 1989, was reportedly found beneath the rubble of his heavily fortified residence after missiles struck what officials described as a top-security underground bunker in the capital.

U.S. President Donald Trump later confirmed the development in a post on Truth Social, writing:

“One of the most evil people in history is dead.”

In a follow-up statement, Trump said the operation represented justice not only for Iranians but also for Americans and others around the world. He claimed Khamenei was unable to evade U.S. intelligence and surveillance systems, stressing that the strike was conducted in close coordination with Israel.

“This is the single greatest chance for the Iranian people to take back their country,” Trump wrote, warning that “heavy and pinpoint bombing will continue… as long as necessary.”

Israeli officials described the assault as part of a meticulously planned operation aimed at Iran’s top military and political leadership. The Israel Defense Forces announced the “elimination” of nearly all senior Iranian defence chiefs, with unconfirmed reports suggesting as many as 40 high-ranking officials were killed.

An Israeli military source said the strikes targeted three separate locations where senior regime figures were meeting simultaneously, calling the operation the result of months of intelligence gathering.

Among those reportedly killed were Iran’s defence minister and senior commanders of the Revolutionary Guard, although Iranian officials had earlier dismissed reports of Khamenei’s death as “mental warfare.” Iran’s foreign minister had previously insisted the supreme leader was alive, but Khamenei failed to appear for a scheduled televised address.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a direct appeal to the Iranian public, urging citizens to “take to the streets en masse” and bring an end to the current regime.

U.S. and Israeli sources said more than 200 warplanes, backed by Tomahawk cruise missiles, struck roughly 500 targets in what Israeli officials dubbed Operation Roaring Lion. Advanced U.S. fighter jets and multiple aircraft carriers were deployed across the region during the operation.

Iran retaliated swiftly, launching missile and drone attacks on U.S. military bases in Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. Explosions were reported near major installations, including the U.S. Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain and Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar.

At least one person was reported killed in Abu Dhabi, while Israeli emergency services said 89 people sustained minor injuries following aerial interceptions over Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Videos circulating online appeared to show flames near Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah area after a suspected drone strike, prompting evacuations and panic among residents and tourists.

Founded in 1979, the Islamic Republic now faces an uncertain future as questions mount over leadership succession and the risk of a wider regional war. Iranian authorities have yet to announce a formal transition plan, while military operations across the Middle East remain ongoing.
