Authorities have confirmed that thirteen people were killed when part of a Pentecostal Church building collapsed on Thursday night in Dlangubo in KwaZulu-Natal caused by heavy rainfall.
Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said the area experienced a storm and heavy winds which are believed to have resulted in the incident. Police were still at the scene and a total of 29 people have been transported to hospital, she said.
"Residents were left with no electricity, as well as houses and other establishments flooded and personal belongings found up to 200m away from their residence, due to the strong winds."
Thousands of people gathered at the Ulundi Worship Centre, northern KZN in South Africa yesterday to pay their last respects to church members who died after their church collapsed last Thursday.
Pentecostal Holiness Church members were; Nonkanyiso Shandu (35), Samkelisiwe Mzila (34), Phokuhle Mdluli (34), Thandaza Dube (37) and Bongeka Masondo (47) were among the 13 who died.
